Frequently asked questions

These are straight answers to the plumbing questions we hear most from homeowners and businesses around Dayton.

Services

How do I know if my water heater needs repair or replacement?

If your water heater is more than 10 to 12 years old, is leaking, makes noise, or puts out rusty water, replacement is usually the better call. Options include conventional gas or electric tank heaters, high-efficiency condensing gas units, and tankless on-demand systems. Tankless saves space and energy for households with high intermittent demand, but it may need upgrades to your gas or electrical service. We look at your usage, energy costs and local code before recommending one. Read more about our water heater work.

Why does my drain keep clogging?

Common causes are grease and fats in kitchen lines, hair and soap buildup in bathrooms, foreign objects, and tree roots in sewer lines. We start with a camera inspection to find the cause, then choose mechanical snaking, hydro-jetting or a targeted repair. Because hydro-jetting needs a pipe evaluation first, we check the line before we use it. More on drain cleaning and jetting.

Do you handle sewer line problems and backups?

Yes. We use camera inspection to find damaged or root-blocked sewer lines, and we do minimally invasive sewer line replacement when a line has failed. During a sewage backup, avoid contact with the water, ventilate the space if it's safe, and call us. More on sewer line replacement.

Why does my sump pump run constantly, or not at all?

A pump that runs nonstop often has a stuck float switch or a failed check valve, or it's undersized for the amount of water coming in. A pump that won't run may have lost power, tripped a breaker, have a jammed float, or have a worn-out motor. We diagnose and install sump pumps, and we include sump pump checks in our maintenance visits.

Scheduling

What should I do if a pipe bursts or I have a major leak?

Shut off the main water valve first to limit flooding. If water is near outlets, turn off the electricity, and then move valuables to a dry area. Take photos of the damage for insurance, and call or text us at 937-815-2006, because our emergency plumbing service is available 24/7.

How often should I schedule plumbing maintenance?

Once a year works for most homes, and older homes or properties with frequent issues do better with checks twice a year. A typical visit covers checking for leaks, testing the water heater pressure-relief valve, flushing sediment, inspecting the sump pump, cleaning drains and looking over pipe condition. We offer maintenance plans based on the age of your home and how you use it.
