# Signs your water heater is wearing out

A water heater usually gives you some warning before it quits. Here is what the common signs mean and which ones call for a plumber right away.

## Key takeaways

- Rusty water from the hot side only usually points to the heater, not your pipes.
- Rumbling and popping are signs of sediment, which is common with hard water.
- Find the exact source of a leak before assuming the tank is done.
- Water leaking from the tank shell itself means the heater needs to be replaced.

## Rusty or discolored hot water

If water from your taps looks brown or orange, first figure out where it is coming from. Run a cold tap for a minute, then a hot tap.

- **Only the hot side is rusty.** The problem is likely in the water heater. Either the anode rod is used up and the tank is starting to rust inside, or rust from sediment is being stirred up.
- **Both sides are rusty.** The cause is more likely your supply pipes or the water main. Older homes around Dayton sometimes still have galvanized steel pipe, which rusts from the inside as it ages. Nearby work on a water main can also stir up discoloration for a short time.

If the hot side alone is rusty, draining a few gallons from the tank's drain valve can tell you more. Water that stays rusty after several gallons suggests the tank lining is failing. A plumber can check the anode and tell you whether the tank is worth saving.

## Rumbling, popping and other noises

Popping or rumbling when the burner or elements run is the classic sign of sediment. Minerals from hard water settle at the bottom of the tank. Water trapped under that layer boils in small bursts. The noise itself is not dangerous, but it means the heater is working harder and the bottom of the tank is running hotter than it should.

Flushing can help if the sediment has not hardened too much. See [why and how often to flush a water heater](/guides/water-heater-guide/flushing-a-water-heater/).

Other sounds mean different things:

- **Light ticking** as pipes heat and cool is usually normal.
- **Sizzling or hissing on a gas heater** can mean water is dripping onto the burner. Have it checked.
- **Screeching or whining** can point to a partly closed valve restricting flow.

## Water at the base of the heater

A puddle under a water heater does not always mean the tank has failed. Dry the area and look for the source:

- **Fittings at the top.** Loose or corroded connections can drip down the side of the tank.
- **The relief valve discharge pipe.** If water comes out of the temperature and pressure relief valve, the tank may be overheating or the pressure may be too high. Never plug this pipe. Call a plumber.
- **The drain valve.** Old drain valves can drip from the spout or around the stem.
- **Condensation.** A gas heater can sweat when very cold water fills it, especially in winter. This usually stops once the tank heats up.
- **The tank itself.** If water is seeping from the shell or from under the jacket, the tank has rusted through and cannot be repaired.

If the tank is leaking, shut the cold water supply valve and turn the gas to off or switch off the breaker, then call a plumber. A drain pan piped to a floor drain helps protect a finished basement. [Leak repair](/services/leak-repair/) covers what a plumber checks.

## Inconsistent or short hot water

When hot water runs out sooner than it used to or swings between hot and lukewarm, common causes include:

- **A failed element or thermostat** on an electric heater. One working element often gives a small amount of lukewarm water.
- **A pilot or thermocouple problem** on a gas heater.
- **A broken dip tube**, which lets cold water mix in at the top of the tank.
- **Sediment** taking up space and insulating the water from the heat source.
- **Winter.** Incoming water in the Dayton area is colder in winter, so the same heater delivers less hot water in January. Some drop is normal. A sudden change is not.

On a tankless unit, a very low flow rate may not trip the burner at all, and scale buildup can cause temperature swings.

## Age and when signs add up

The heater's label shows a serial number that usually encodes the manufacture date. The format varies by maker. Tank heaters commonly last somewhere around 8 to 12 years, and hard water can shorten that.

One sign on a newer heater usually means a repairable part. Several signs on an older heater usually mean the tank is near the end. Planning a replacement before it fails is easier than dealing with a flooded basement. The [water heater guide](/guides/water-heater-guide/) covers how to think through repair or replacement.

## Frequently asked questions

Is it dangerous if my water heater is leaking?

A small drip from a fitting is not an emergency, but it should be fixed. Water coming from the relief valve, or any leak along with a gas smell, needs attention right away. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.

Should I flush a water heater that is already rumbling?

A flush can reduce the noise if the sediment is still loose. On an older tank that has never been flushed, sediment may be packed hard and the drain valve may not reseal. In that case, have a plumber look at it first.

Why does my hot water smell like rotten eggs?

This usually comes from a reaction between a magnesium anode rod and bacteria in the water, and it is more common on well water. A plumber can swap in a different type of anode and suggest other fixes.
